Norma Ammunition: In Depth

Norma was founded as Projektilfabrik A/S by the Enger brothers in Oslo, Norway in 1895. One of them enjoyed an opera by Bellini, which was titled Norma, and he named the company after the opera. The company soon expanded with a factory in Amotfors, Sweden in 1902, then 10 new buildings in 1940, growing to employ 800 workers by 1942. After WWII, Normal capitalized on the market for hunting, and began exporting hunting ammunition in 1950. In 1965, Normal merged with Svenska Metallverken, which had been one of its competitors. A new factory was opened two years later, employing 530 and producing 64 million cartridges.

Normal was then acquired and reacquired, as FFV, Dynamit Nobel AB, and then Ruag Ammotec AG would become new owners. By 2011 Norma had grown to producing ammunition for 106 different calibers, supplying 30 million rounds annually. This grew to 110 calibers by 2013, and Norma acquired a shotshell factory Gyttorp in 2017. In 2021, Norma achieved a new milestone, producing 100 million cartridges per year. In 2022, Beretta Holding became the latest owner of Norma. 

During the 1960s, Norma’s Nils Kvale worked together with Roy Weatherby to develop and produce world-class hunting rifle ammunition. 

Today, Norma’s headquarters and factory are in Amotfors, Varmland which is west of Stockholm in Sweden. Norma produces one of the biggest ranges of ammunition of any factory; over 100 calibers. The company specializes in providing high-grade sporting ammunition.

• Sport Shooting Ammunition

• Golden Target: Optimized for match accuracy, yet at a more affordable price than Diamond. From .223 Remington to 338 Lapua, this ammunition covers the top few competition calibers out there. 
• Lead Max: this is Norma’s line of competition shotshells for trap and skeet.
• Self-Defense Ammunition
• NXD: Non eXpanding Defensive ammunition, loaded using fluted monolithic bullets designed for penetration and not expansion. These are excellent defensive loads, using a lighter specially-designed bullet providing high velocity with lower recoil, and superior wound channel formation. 
• MHP Monolithic Hollow Point all-copper bullets designed for maximum expansion yet also reliable function. This is potentially the new standard for self-defense ammunition.
• SAFEGUARD is Norma’s jacketed hollow point self-defense ammunition. These are available for all major calibers used in revolvers or semi-automatics, and offer a great combination of penetration and expansion at a more affordable price point.
• Silencer Series
• Norma now offers rifle ammunition that is optimized for shorter barrels and suppressor use. In this series of ammunition, Oryx, Ecostrike, and Tipstrike bullets are offered. Users may notice reduced muzzle flash, and a relatively increased muzzle velocity out of shorter barrels, due to more complete burning of the powder charge. This is also easier on the silencer, resulting in less residue and corrosion.
• Reloading Components
• Because Norma manufactures all of their components,they are able to offer brass , primers , powder , and bullets in many calibers. Whether you’re working to load some match ammo for your Palma rifle, some hunting rounds for an upcoming season, or need to build some exotic loads for that 505 Gibbs in case of a “Jurassic Park” scenario, Norma has you covered.
• Norma Ballistics App
• Norma offers its ballistics calculation program, available as a mobile or desktop application. Using Norma projectiles, it will calculate bullet trajectory out to 2,200 yards while also providing reloading data for use with Normal powder and components. When used on a phone it will also interface with a Kestrel Bluetooth-compatible weather device. The app is even designed to provide offline functionality, in case your shooting or hunting trip is in a location without wifi or cell service.
