Igman .223 Rem Ammo FAQ:

Originally the .223 was designed for self-defense, varmint hunting, and medium game. Because of its Full Metal Jacket design, this round is great for high-volume shooting at the range.

55 grain is considered the standard grain weight, although there are a couple of lighter rounds and quite a few heavier rounds.

Typically the .223 flies flatter and faster but the .308 has more impact and penetration at the target.
